In Love with Kerala : Lungi Blouse Photos

Hi all,

You guys must have heard of the movie, 'Nirakazhcha'. It was made to promote Kerala Tourism. A trailer was released long back called 'In Love with Kerala' as a promotional video for this movie. In that video the lead lady wore Lungi Blouse and Thorthu. It definitely shows that this dress is considered equal to Set-Saree or Set-Mundu by foreigners. They dont have any preconceptions about a woman or girl in Lungi Blouse and Thorthu other than that this lady or girl is native to Kerala. It is just like any other native attire. Women should be encouraged to wear this attire before its lost to history.

  1. Rohit,
I fully endorse your views regarding this great traditional attire of Kerala(especially Southern Kerala,as this was not common beyond Trichur).
It was used as a casual dress and worn at home, even by Middle class women(housewifes) as it was comfortable and convenient, till about 1990.You can see this dress commonly worn by almost all the top heroines of that period like sheela, jayabharathy, seema, geetha, madhavi, swapna, parvathy etc. Then came the maxi-salwar kameez invasion which sounded the death knell of this gorgeous attire.
The reason why it was used by the so called B grade movie makers is it was a dress which could be manipulated easily to look vulgar.

You may remember the scene in the movie ""April 19"" where the modern Kausalya(nandini) who comes from Bombay to her husbands tharavadu wears this attire and the servants of the house appreciating it.The only way to prevent it from going extinct is some mainstream heroine wearing it in movies, and also in serials

    1. I wish some thing like that happens. But the fact is that young girls find this dress repulsive, thanks to the B-grade soft porn industry and until they feel that the society is okay with this dress and there are not stigmata attached to it or the wearer. Most of my relatives and my girl friend do wear mundu/lungi when ever possible or they feel like. Its treated just like any other attire by them. May because I am used to it that I find it funny and weird when people think the attire is bad.
I have noticed that most of the young actresses have worn Lungi/ mundu atleast for scene in movies. But there are no movies in which the lead actress has to wear it through out the film. I wish such a movie comes out in which the lead actress charactor wears Lungi blouse or any modern version (Lungi with Kurtha or shirt) to bring it back into fashion.

Thanks for your comment. Please do keep sharing your view points.
